A USB jig will auto boot into download mode. They are a couple of bucks on eBay.

Power the phone off, insert the jig into the micro USB port, power the phone on. It will boot into download mode.

On previous boot loaders it will also remove the yellow tattle tale triangle and reset the custom binary counter to zero.

On newer phones it doesn't do this anymore. All it does is force a download mode which is super convenient.

I only have one cable, and I don't know anyone else with a fascinate for a borrow-their-cable scenario. As for the different computers, I've been using 2 different laptops because I'm not around my computer at the moment. Maybe when I get home I'll be able to see if it'll work on that.

Now I'm quite skeptical about using jigs. Not from what you said, though. I went to ebay and a few I saw kept saying that if your phone is stuck on a black screen like mine, then the jig will do nothing.

So..uh...in preparation of having my Fascinating brick...how about some recommendations on other phones? Should I stick with the Galaxy Family, or switch it up to a DROID or something?

You'll get a number of different responses in regards to that question, depending on who/where you ask it. The Galaxy line is great & Samsung makes a fine product. I had the original Galaxy Fascinate, and most recently obtained the Galaxy S3. The Fascinate was an amazing phone, & the S3 truly has no equal. With that said, Motorola also makes a fine product, so it really boils down to a matter of preference. I prefer Samsung myself, so I would just say, do your homework on both and then decide what's best for YOU.
Good luck with your decision and let us what you decide on.

By chance would you happen to have the readout like this poster did from Odin? Bricked - xda-developers

Do you know what you battery level was like before you started using Odin? A theory many be the battery itself is just dead. think my phone hardware bricked - xda-developers

Having owned multiple Motorola and Samsung phones, I would say on the user experience, Samsung I prefer. On the RF...you can't compete with Motorola (both WiFi and cellular radios). Until someone proves me wrong, Motorola is the king of RF. For instance, when I went from my Atrix 4G to my Skyrocket, there was an immediate difference in signal at my house with service. My Atrix 4G got full bars all the time, no questions. The Skyrocket could barely maintain three bars. Now each interface is different for each phone, but with the Samsung phones, I cannot replicate the signal quality I had with Motorola.

I am also on AT&T. GSM and CDMA technology work differently. That could be something else to think about too.

The person from the first link was able to get to the Samsung logo. I'm not even able to turn on my phone anymore, so I don't have the same problem he did. My phone just got stuck on the boot animation, and rebooting it wouldn't help. It bricked when it failed to return to stock through Odin.

And I had just finished charging my Fascinate before it bricked, so I should have ended up with more than 70%. And the person from the second link also said that you can get into download mode even without the battery, so it shouldn't be a problem, right?
