Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in kies & try agai

Hi. I was trying to update my Galaxy s2 LTE via Kies software.

However, I ended up with a screen with these texts:

    ODIN MODE
    PRODUCT NAME: SGH-727R
    CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: NO
    CURRENT BINARY: SAMSUNG OFFICIAL

I have tried the solutions provided by Ollie and they don't seem to work.
First of all, power+volume up/down button does not take me to the download mode.
Second, rebooting the phone by removing the battery does not do anything.

My service provider is Rogers (Canada)
    Thank you for the help

Odin Mode is your download mode

Grab Odin 1.85 and launch it as administrator.
Download your Rogers firmware and unzip it once.
Select PDA in Odin and target the unzipped firmware.
Plug the phone in via the Factory USB cable.
Odin should turn yellow and ID COM displays a random number.
    Press Start.

You can try just the Volume Down+Power+Home button as well.

this is little embrassing...but I tried the solution you provided (3rd time trying), but it worked! I must have repeated mistakes.

    I got it working again!

Don't let it be embarrassing! I've been booting into download and recovery for a long time now and still have to attempt it over again from time to time. Glad it worked out for you. Welcome!

    Hello.
I'm also having the same problem. I have Samsung Infuse 4G I997R Firmware 2.3. I am stuck at the "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again" screen. When I connect it to odin in download mode I get a "<ID:0/003> Added!!" message and a yellow bar, although when I try to flash it back to stock firmware I get a red fail! at the top of the screen. The message box says "<ID:0/003> Added!!<OSM> Enter CS for MD5..
<OSM> Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..
    <OSM> Please wait..
    <OSM> I727RUXKJ7_I727RRWCKJ7_I727RUXKJ7_HOME.tar.md5 is valid.
    <OSM> Checking MD5 finished Sucessfully..
    <OSM> Leave CS..

Hope this helps, I really appreciate it!!!

    Thanks

    Same Problemm

"firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again"

I have a S2 I777 on Sprint up in Alaska. I tried using ODIN to root my phone. Now the above ^^ is all I see. I've tried booting into download and recovery mode (hold down volume buttons and power) but that same screen pops up. Kies hasn't been able to perform the emergency firmware update. I'm out of my league here and would love a quick response!!

    Thank you
