Nevermind guys. I tried upgrading to an official version and it worked. I don't know what I did wrong last time. It said that it passed when I was installing a custom version but it never started. Thanks anyway.

Download Odin 1.85:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/atta...3&d=1304094576
Extract (unzip) Odin 1.85 one time.
Download this kernel:
(The actual link is just below "Follow me on G+" at the bottom of the page)
http://download.chainfire.eu/145/CF-...WM5-PROPER.zip
- Extract (unzip) the attached CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.zip one time.
- (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer.
- Start Odin by right clicking it and select Run as Administrator.
- Click the PDA button, and select CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.tar.
- Put your phone into download mode (Volume Down+Home Button+Power Button until it reboots. Volume Up after the confirmation page appears to acknowledge)
- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer with the factory supplied USB cable. Do not use a USB hub.
- Odin should recognize your phone. The top left box will turn yellow and ID COM will display a random number. If your computer starts installing drivers let it completely finish before continuing.
- Make sure repartition is not checked.
- Click the Start button.
- Wait for the phone to reboot.

Hey Ollie, thanks for the help but it's doing the same thing as before. It shows a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark and then turns off. I can still enter download mode though and install official firmware.
Flash your stock firmware to get the phone up and running. They have them at Sammobile dot com.
I believe there are other ways to root by flashing Super user in recovery.

Yay, my phone is rooted! I tried flashing it with a different but close kernal like 'lp9' and it worked.
OK so heres the latest. I downloaded and used 7zip successfully on the XXLPH kernel and the above orange firmware.
I've tried flashing the kernel over in download mode and odin sees my phone and starts flashing and the green progress bar gets to the end but doesnt say pass and seems to get stuck on "nand write start" everytime no matter how long I wait for it.Would ticking re partition change the process?
I also tried just flashing the firmware but this just gives out "nand write start" with no progress bar moving
Is there another ICS kernel I can try?
Or simlpy a step by step guide for idiots on how to fix this would also be awesome.
