    ICS, Kies Upgrade problems

I have an unlocked S2 that I was attempting to upgrade the firmware to ICS via Kies on a PC. Everything looked good bu at around 85% progress in the installation or downloading process of the update, it froze.

Stuck on the 'Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in kies & try again.'

I can't get it to change from this screen and I can't upgrade or reset the phone. I attempted the reset with the hold, vol. down & power buttons pressed but it brought me to the rooting option screen. I could choose to root or reset but resetting brought be back to the frozen screen I mentioned. I've restarted the phone (removing battery) and kies but nothing works.

Am I only left with trying to root the device or can I somehow manage to get back on the upgrade track (Which I prefer)?

Volume down+power button is download mode. This is exactly what you need. It is not just for rooting. It also allows you to flash factory firmwares back onto your phone. If your computer still recognizes your phone. Does it?

Well, Kies doesn't recognize the phone but the computer does see something connected...How/where would I flash factory firmware?

You would use a program called Odin (version 1.85) to flash the firmware while your phone is in download mode.

I don't suppose there's a guide in this forum on how to go through that is there?...And does this void the warranty?

I will type you a guide if you tell me a couple of things. Who is your telephone provider and which country?

And no, it won't void your warranty.

Awesome...So, Switzerland and Swisscom...I no longer can access the PC and only have a Mac for a couple of days - I take it that complicates matters?

It does complicate it a little, but only because I haven't used the Mac version of Odin. It is called Heimdall. I will be right back.

You will have to go to sammobile.com and register on their site to get a download. Registering is free.

Once you have registered and logged in...to get the firmware download you do this:

In the row of tabs that reads Home, Samfit, Factory Guarantee, Firmwares select the tab that says Firmware.

Then on the left hand side under Type select Smartphone.

    Then under OS Select Android.

Then under Models select GT i9100.

    Finally under Region select Europe.

You will see a bunch of listings and the one you are interested in reads like this:

    PDA:I9100BULPC Android:4.0.3 Date:2012 April CSC:i9100OSWCLP3 Country/Carrier:Switzerland (Swisscom)

That is ICS. There is also a 2.3.5 GingerBread should you want to stick with it instead.

Here is a video on how to use Heimdall:

There is a download link to Heimdall in the description of the video.

Unfortunately I cannot help you use Heimdall since I do everything on my Windows Box.
