Help! I'm having this same problem but I can't get it to reboot. When I turn it off and back on this way, it still just shows the "firmware upgrade encountered an issue" notice. I have the GAlaxy S2, SGH-T989D. Any other ideas?

You are going to have to flash the firmware using a program called Odin from your PC. That or take into your dealer.

Do you have the step by steps to flash the firmware with Odin? I have the latest version(1.85), but I don't know what exactly to do. I have the same problem as the others have mentioned in this thread. U.S., Galaxy S2 through T-Mobile. I've uninstalled/reinstalled KIES twice, tried the rebooting method you have mentioned and the phone still goes back to the "firmware upgrade has encountered an issue" screen.
Let me grab the firmware for you real quick. Then I will post the instructions

This is the latest U.S. Tmo firmware (June 2012) :Hotfile.com: One click file hosting: T989UVLE1_T989TMBLE1_TMB.zip
Download it and unzip it using 7zip or Winrar.
It has to be flashed with Odin 1.85.
Make sure all Samsung Kies processes are killed in your computer's Task Manager.
To flash it with Odin,
1. Unplug your phone from your computer and turn the phone off.
2. Press and hold Volume Down+Home Button+Power Button until you are in download mode.
3. Right Click on the Odin.exe and select Run As Administrator.
4. Plug your phone into the computer using the factory USB cable. If your computer starts installing some drivers let it completely finish.
5. A box in Odin will turn yellow in color and ID Com will show a random number.
6. In Odin select "PDA" and load the firmware you downloaded before.
7. Press Start.
8. Do not interrupt the phone while Odin is flashing the software!! The phone will reboot on its own
9. Let the phone start up completely and then do factory data reset.
