Issues with phone after firmware update

I've had some problems with my phone since a firmware update yesterday.

Kies said there was a firmware update, which I started but it froze halfway because Kies stopped detecting that the phone was plugged in.
This has been a problem recently with Kies (even though the phone and laptop recognised that the phone was connected).
After a couple more attempts I realised there was a newer version of Kies, downloaded that and it seemed ok. Went ahead to complete the firmware update.

It looks like some parts of the update have been successful but some parts are incomplete.

    - The LOGS function of the phone is now completely blank and remains that way regardless of calls/messages sent since the update.
    - In MESSAGES, if I create a new message, I cannot access the contacts list. The phone just brings up a blank screen, then after a while of doing nothing says "contacts not available". But if I then go to the CONTACTS function, all the contacts are there.

    I have two questions:
    1) How do I get the above two functions working again? Should I uninstall and re-install the software on the phone? I have no past experience with this or any techy stuff before... in the past I've just plugged the phone in to Kies from time to time to see if the software needs updating.

    2) How can I keep up-to-date with updates to the Kies software? It was only because of the persistent problem I had in getting Kies to recognise the phone that I went to download Kies again and found a newer version which seems to have fixed the problem.

Re: Issues with phone after firmware update

You should make a backup in Samsung Kies and then do a factory data reset on the phone. It is an important step that Google omits for whatever reason I can't fathom.
