Question Galaxy S2 4G Running Very Hot

My Galaxy S2 suddenly started to run very, very hot yesterday for no obvious reason. The battery charge ran down just as suddenly and became almost empty.
I was not doing anything unusual. I just made two local calls, looked at a few photos and checked a news channel. I noticed that my Telstra email app kept searching for new emails for longer than usual. I also noticed that my provider informed me that I had almost reached the limit of my data usage (1G). This problem occurred unexpectedly as i have never used more than about 10% of my data in the 4 months of ownership.
The phone cooled down after turning off and removing the SIM card. It now charges and works OK without the SIM card at present. I will replace the SIM when I am sure that my data usage is not out of my control.
Can anyone help me find the cause of this "running abnormally hot" and what can be done about it.
Is it a fault in the hardware or is it an app or software problem? I would be glad to hear from the forum.

Hello Tony - welcome to the forum!

I'm sorry to hear about the problems you ran into with your phone, but I'm going to ask you to be patient and hold on for awhile until one of our Rescue Squad guys can swing by and give you a hand.

    Welcome to the forum Tony!
By chance, have you downloaded any new apps recently? You may also try going into your applications manager and clearing the cache under the email client you're currently using.
That's about all i can suggest at the moment. Hopefully someone else will be able to offer some more suggestions.
    Good luck!

Thank you CR6 for your reply.
I have not installed any new apps lately.
I went into the Applications Manager but could not find any email client listed there. I use gmail and BigPond (Telstra Australia) for emails but could not find any cache associated with the settings for these clients to delete.
My provider (Telstra BigPond) has suggested I only use the phone for calls and SMS until my recent data usage can be assessed at the end of the "month" which will be on 20 Sept 2012. They have switched off data access and suggested that I do not use Wi-Fi until the rogue app (my interpretaion) can be identified.
My feeling is that the problem was associated with Telstra rather than Wi-Fi as the Telstra 3G or 4G data allowance suddendly increased at the time of the overheating.
I look forward to any further ideas from you and the forum. Thanks again.

My guess is on Google's auto background sync afaik.

Do you have a microsdcard in your phone? If so, remove it to see if it is the culprit.

Also, if you have root head over to XDA and search for Better Battery Stats. The Dev hosts a free version there or you can pick up the donate version from the market. It can tell you a lot of info about what is happening in the background of your phone.

Thank you Ollie. I have a microsdcard in the the phone and have removed it now. I do not know what you mean by "root" but presume you mean access to a developer group called XDA . I will look for the donate version on the market. I am not using the phone until 20th Sept (see previous post) which is frustrating.
What could be the reason why an SD card is the culprit?
Should I disable autoupdate, and how would this help please?
I appreciate your interest and advice.

Having root is having modified your phone so that you have administrative rights to all file structures and phone functions.

It is the same as having an admin account on Windows instead of a limiting Guest account.

I'm not sure what you mean by auto update.

Sorry, I should have said auto-sync. As I undertand it, this means that various apps and email etc can be updated when the phone is connected to Wi-Fi or the provider. At present my phone allows auto-sync.
Re root, I have done nothing to change administrative rights so I probably have only guest status with the option to change the normal settings.
