Question Question - Going out of country, need advice on how to avoid roaming charges.

I am heading out of the country for a week and would like to be able to stay in touch without incurring ridiculous roaming charges. Any suggestions on how to go about this? I know that skype on verizon will not work, how bout google voice or the other skype app?

Setting>Wireless Networks>Mobile Networks>Data Roaming <<<< Make sure it is unchecked. Then you will be fine.

little more info. Going to St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. Called Verizon Global Services and they said that I would only incur roaming charges if using voice minutes. They stated that text and data would be according to whatever plan I had now, which for data is unlimited.

Ohhh, well then... I go to Canada all the time as my GF is from there. I have to turn off roaming or I will be viscously assaulted by my next bill. God forbid I need to turn it on quick to get directions and I see a $60 charge.

I...never trust CSR on the first try. Call back a few times and talk to different people about the same info. Sounds odd to me you would get charged talk minutes but not data. Roaming is roaming. One CSR not knowing what they are talking about could cost you lots of money.

Yeah I had planned to call back later. I found on their website that global data rates for St. Thomas is included with the domestic plan, so maybe they were right.

Just wanted to follow-up. I called and double checked that indeed text and data do not cost any extra to use in St. Thomas, only roaming if you use voice. Opted for Fring to communicate with people I am with down there as it also includes a low cost paid option to call landlines back here if needed.
