Cannot connect phone to computer - USB device not recognized

Hi! I'm a total newbie, but a network admin by day so I'm familiar with computers. I am trying to root my phone to get the bloatware off, and I cannot figure this out for the life of me.

I connect the phone to the computer via the usb port that is connected to the motherboard. I've downloaded and installed the drivers from every location that has been recommended in this forum. I've googled until my hands hurt.

Does anyone have any additional recommendations?

Do you get device not recognized when on download mode or any time you plug the phone in.

By the way Welcome to the forum!

Are you using the original data cable that came with the phone?

try putting your phone in download mode (turn the phone off hold the volume down button, then plug the usb cord in) once in odin use it to restore froyo ed05 from there you should be able to root your phone, and should be recognized by the computer, i had this ahppen to me also and i just used odin for froyo ed05 and it fixed it, i then loaded up cwm and flashed comrom and all is well.

We don't recommend using the ED05 tar file, as it has caused problems for some. Not all users but some.

I had the same issue for awhile. Sometimes starting the phone with the USB already connected can get it to connect properly.

As bhfd64 said, using a cable other than the one that came with the phone can cause problems. Try connecting your phone to a different computer to test if it's the phone or the computer.
