Well it was the long way to do it, but at least you got some more experience in the process

They say you learn more from your failures than your successes, but I don't think it was worth the hours taken off the end of my life due to my rise in blood pressure over the last 24 hours.

"they" be right! And don't think if it as a waste.....as Ollie pointed out, you gained a lot of experience by doing all of this, & that's always a good thing....even if it's frustrating at times!

So I guess the lesson learned here for me is DO NOT do a factory reset while I have the Siyah kernel on my phone. So my question for those who know is this, is wiping the dalvic, cache and extweaks as good as a factory reset? If not, how do I safely do a factory reset and under what circumstance would I "need" to do one in the future?

    Here is UCLE5

If you use the other files then make sure to flash the linked siyah kernel in that thread before doing any Modding. You wouldn't want to be the second known case of the emmc bug lol.

I'm downloading this file now to have it *just in case*. So if I understand you correctly this is C.O.M.P.L.E.T.E.L.Y stock and you're CERTAIN it does not have the eMMC bug? If I wen't to this, would I be able to safely catch any OTA's assuming the unlikely event Samsung releases Jelly Bean for my phone?

Okay. That stock firmware is completely stock. Kernel, OS, and modem. The flaw is in the stock kernel. There shouldn't be a reason why you can't factory reset on Siyah. Are others on that kernel facing the same issue?

If you flash that stock firmware you will receive OTAs fine. If you are running root you may never even receive a upgrade notice and/or the upgrade will wipe your root.

I would stick to being rooted, have a Nandroid available that is bare bones root (no apps installed) that way if you need a factory reset you simply flash back the Nandroid bypassing the need to wipe.

Then when JB is released for your phone make one more Nandroid of ICS, wait a day for the devs to root it, then move up to JB after. This way you have a last good ICS Nandroid in case JB has bugs.
