Help The newbie out, updating OS on old phone

Well thank you for have a place like this to help out .
I have a Samsung S II model SGH-S959G with Android Ver. 2.3.6 on it. I try to download apps and it says not compatible with this OS. Can I update to a newer operating system when the phone tells me there is no upgrades. I see a lot of Youtube stuff but not sure I trust that.I sure would like to upgrade but I am not sure you can or I do not want to ruin the phone. If it can be done then how do I go about doing it, is there a step by step manual, because this old fool hates to try new things, but there comes a time so here I am. Please help!!!!

Your S2 is 5 years old and while it may not seem old and likely still runs great, it's actually a "senior citizen" in smartphone years. Smartphones typically only receive a couple of updates to the operating system before it's abandoned. If your system is telling you there are no more updates, there isn't much you can do aside from purchasing a newer device. Being that you're on OS version 2.3.6 (Gingerbread) most newer devices are on version 5.0 (Lollipop) & 6.0 (Marshmallow). As you've come to realize, older model smartphones with lower OS versions will be limited in downloading & using the latest apps.
You could "root" your device but that won't necessarily give you the OS boost you need. It depends on the app/apps you're interested in. If you're not interested in upgrading to a newer device my suggestion would be to search the play store for an alternate app.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Unfortunately your options are few and far between with this particular device. Good luck!
