so, right now i have a straighttalk sim in the phone. i can make and receive calls but can't connect to internet. when i added the new apn and delete the 310 and 410 setting(can't remembered exactly what it is). it connects to the internet but it's slow and show an "E" on the top screen. i assuming that's an error code.

alright, now to unlock the phone. so, if i unlock the phone i should be able to delete the old apn, right? would it automatically be deleted after i unlock it?
    thanks

No, I believe the "E" stands for Edge - the slowest of the internet speeds.

I am pretty certain all you need to do is root the phone. I don't even know for 100% sure, because the day I got my phone I unlocked my bootloader and loaded a custom ROM.

Unlocking the bootloader gives you the ability to load custom ROMs. Rooting your phone with give you root access(admin rights in the Linux world). To unlock the SIM, you need to have a StraightTalk SIM, which I am assuming you already have. Then you have to get a SIM unlock code so you can unlock the SIM and use it with a StraightTalk SIM. It sounds like you have already done this if the phone came to you unlocked. Now all you need to do is get the correct APN information. The APN info can be different depending on where in the country you are.

It looks like for StraighTalk, there is only one.

    Data APN: att.mvno
    Data APN Username: blank
    Data APN Password: blank
    MMS APN: att.mvno
    MMS Username: blank
    MMS Password: blank
    MMS MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
    MMS Proxy: 66.209.11.33:80
    MMS MAxsize: blank
    MMS Profurl: blank
    WAP APN: blank
    WAP Username: blank
    WAP Password: blank
    WAP Gateway: blank
    WAP Homepage: blank
    WAP Port: blank

I don't know if this will work, or if it is similar to what you have now. This is just some info I found. Rooting the phone is not difficult, but it will void any warranty, which I am assuming is already done as you have unlocked the SIM, therefore voiding AT&T's warranty. I can't speak for Samsung, I think theirs is one year as well.

I may have to search a little more and see what I can come up with.

that's the same info ST send me with the sim card. when i added the new apn info. the mms maxsize and mms profurl are already set to 310 and 410 respectively, i believed. so, i deleted that and it connects to internet but really slow with an "E" showed up on top screen.
i deleted and added the new apn a couple times and no luck. i contacted ST and they told me that now i need to unlock my phone. which i need to buy the gsm sim card for it to work.

OK. So you need to get an unlock code for the phone.

If anyone else is having a similar problem. I fixed it by Checking Use packet data.
