Mms and packet data?

Hello, sorry if this is in the wrong area, as I'm new to this forum. Recently I've gotten the samsung galaxy s2 skyrocket and its been upgraded to ICS. I'm on a 300MB mobile data plan which is why I prefer to just leave my internet off and use wifi when I can. When sending/receiving mms, I must first turn on my packet data. I find it a hassel to do this every single time. I've also been having an issue where the person sending me a photo or video will have to resend it so that I can view the message because it refuses to download the first time. What might be up with my phone? Is there a way I could send/receive mms without having to turn on my packet data or is it just an annoying thing I'll have to deal with?

You could use a data toggle to turn it off and on. Or maybe see if a third party sms app will bypass the data requirement. Like GoSMS or Handcent.
